The Small Ruminant Workshop held Oct 23 & 24, 2009

A necropsy was done to show shepherds the inner workings and problems a sheep may experience.

Vets showed workshop attendees the various problems that lambs may present.

This year top producers with great quality animals have consigned top quality animals. The sale starts at 1:00pm, but come early to talk to producers.

No Royal Whites this year- but Katahdins from Top Producers and the University of Maryland are coming

I have had quite a few inquiries about what breeds will be coming this year- the answer-
Katahdins
and Katahdin X Dorpers.

We have really good Shepherds bringing really good sheep this year. I know that the quality will be high. I have seen the stock from many of these producers before and I am always impressed by their animals.

If you are a sheep producer, and you have an "un popular" breed- this is exactly the type of place you need to be!!
Sales such as this are the perfect place to showcase not just your breeding stock, but your breed as well. Producers with breeds such as St. Croix or Wiltshire Horn- who generally have to travel a long distance to find another producer with that breed should make it a point to come to the sale and "talk up" the benefits of the breed. After all, there was SOME reason you chose them over a different breed of hair sheep.
If you are a producer with these breeds and you are afraid you will invest a lot of time and money coming to a sale, only to go home with your sheep because no one bought them, then make it a point to let people know you will be there. People are interested in them- really- I know- because they are calling to find out if your breed will be at the sale!!

2009 sale shaping up to be a good one!

This years sale is shaping up to be a good one! We have sheep coming from top-notch shepherds! These seed-stock producers are selling animals of quality and to acknowledge the work and effort that goes into selection and production of breeding stock, there are minimum bid prices.

We will also be auctioning items to benefit the Mifflin County 4H Sheep Club and the Mifflin County FFA. Kids from these clubs work the sale and do a great job. We are lucky to have a group of kids who are interested in sheep production- so if you attend the sale, pick up a bid number and bid on an item to support our Youth!

We have asked Pennsylvania Association for Sustainable Agriculture (PASA) for help putting on an educational event in conjunction with our sale.
They have lined up a day and a half of really great speakers on important topics such as

Hoof care & trimming
lambing and kidding
necropsy
nutrition
herd management
preventing parasite infestations

The folks at PASA do an excellent job and are connected with dynamic speakers who really help you understand the topics.

This sale is for the Breeding Stock of ALL breeds of Hair sheep. It is open to purebreds, registered, percentage, full-bloods, and commercial HAIR sheep only. Again, this sale is for Breeding Stock!

There are Minimum bid requirements. This is not a sale to unload poor quality sheep, it is a sale to purchase good quality animals that will improve your flocks.

From the South-
I 83 North to I 81 South to Rt. 322 West. Look for and follow signs saying To Penn State or To State College-
Exit Rt. 322 at Rt. 655 Belleville/ Reedsville
At the light at the end of the exit ramp, turn right. At the Next light turn right, Go straight onto Mill Pond Dr. to Fairgrounds. From the light at the exit ramp the fairgrounds are only 2/10 mile.

From the West-
I 80 East exit 161 Bellefonte, US 220/ Rt. 26 South. Continue on Rt. 26 south (via exit 81 towards Pleasant Gap)
Turn left onto Rt. 144 until it intersects with Rt. 322
Turn left onto Rt. 322 East
Exit Rt. 322 at Rt. 655 Belleville/ Reedsville.
At the end of the exit ramp turn left. At the Next light turn right, Go straight onto Mill Pond Dr. to Fairgrounds.

From the North-
Rt. 15 South to US 220 towards Lock Haven to I80 West exit at Bellefonte, US 220. Rt. 26 South and follow the directions from the West.

From the East-
I 80 West exit 224 Danville/Sunbury, Rt. 54 South
Turn right onto Rt. 11 South
Turn right onto Rt. 522 towards Lewistown to Rt. 322 West. Get on Rt. 322 West. Exit Rt. 322 at Rt. 655 Belleville/ Reedsville and follow the remaining directions from the South
